Once upon a time, the listening experience for music consumers was more immersive. Fans spent time staring at album covers, reading liner notes, and sharing insights with friends. Even in the early days of MTV, friends would gather to watch, listen, and discuss the music. Today, however, the experience has become far more transactional, with less cognitive investment and engagement.
Learn more about how the behavior of music consumers is impacting the value of music
The way we choose to listen to and prioritize our music reveals whether we have a transformational or transactional relationship with it. A transformational relationship involves deep engagement, where we immerse ourselves in the music, appreciate its nuances, and connect emotionally with the artist's message. It’s about valuing the experience and allowing it to enrich our lives. In contrast, a transactional relationship is more superficial, treating music as mere background noise or a quick fix
According to the IFPI's Global Music Report 2023, streaming accounted for 65% of global recorded music revenue, showing a shift from physical album engagement to more transactional listening experiences
A Nielsen Music study in 2021 found that 54% of music listeners use playlists as their primary means of listening to music, often curated by algorithms rather than personal choice, reducing deeper engagement with individual albums or artists.
A 2022 survey by MusicWatch found that only 16% of listeners frequently listen to entire albums, preferring single tracks or playlists, which indicates a shift away from the traditional, more engaged album experience.
According to a 2020 report by Global Web Index, the average user spends about 18 hours per week listening to music, but often in shorter, more fragmented sessions, reflecting a more transactional approach to music consumption
The ArtistLink Foundation believes music should be more than just background noise. We see it as a powerful tool for deep engagement, providing an opportunity to explore the stories within songs. By encouraging thoughtful listening, we aim to help individuals develop critical thinking and enhance their communication skills. Music, when actively engaged with, can inspire reflection, foster emotional intelligence, and promote meaningful conversations.

According to a report by the National Endowment for the Arts (2015), students who participate in music education, which includes critical listening, develop better emotional regulation and social skills, which are crucial for effective communication and problem-solving.
A study published in the International Journal of Music Education (2016) found that students who are trained to listen critically to music develop better critical thinking skills, which translates to improved problem-solving capabilities in other areas of their lives.
These studies collectively support the idea that critical listening to music can help develop improved problem-solving and communication skills.
Currently we are developing two programs to be delivered in partnership with libraries, schools, and community centers.
The ArtistLink Foundation presents the Critical Listening and Music Communication Program, a collaborative initiative with libraries, schools, and community centers designed to enhance the music listening experience and foster effective communication skills. This program offers comprehensive course material that teaches participants how to critically listen to various genres of music, both familiar and unfamiliar.
Through a series of engaging workshops and interactive sessions, participants will learn to appreciate the intricacies of different musical styles, understand the historical and cultural contexts of songs, and recognize the elements that make each genre unique. The program encourages deep, thoughtful engagement with music, moving beyond passive listening to active analysis.
In addition to developing critical listening skills, the program emphasizes the importance of effective communication. Participants will learn how to articulate their insights and opinions clearly and confidently, fostering meaningful conversations about music. By honing these skills, students will be able to share their perspectives, participate in discussions, and contribute to a richer, more informed dialogue about music in their communities.
The Critical Listening and Music Communication Program aims to cultivate a deeper appreciation for music, enhance critical thinking, and build a community of informed and articulate music enthusiasts.
The ArtistLink Foundation is excited to introduce the FM2.0 Radio Guest Host Experience, an advanced program designed for graduates of the Critical Listening and Music Communication Program. This initiative offers participants the unique opportunity to put their newly acquired skills to the test by learning how to and guest host content for FM2.0 Radio.
In this program, participants will dive into the world of radio production, learning the ins and outs of creating engaging audio content. They will be guided through the process of developing show concepts, scripting segments, and curating playlists that reflect their critical listening expertise. With hands-on training and mentorship from industry professionals, participants will gain practical experience in audio editing, sound engineering, and broadcast techniques.
As guest hosts on FM2.0 Radio, participants will have the chance to share their insights and musical discoveries with a broader audience.
